Moissanite, like diamonds, is cut for use in jewelry. The people who invented diamond cutting technology chose profit over the honor of their invention, and have kept it a secret within their families since ancient times, so it is not known exactly who invented it or when. However, over the centuries, cutting techniques have become more and more advanced to maximize the brilliance of gemstones. Below is a brief introduction to the 10 shapes we carry in our boutique.
Round brilliant cut
Round Brilliant Cut
The brilliant cut is the most popular cut today, with 58 facets polished to maximize brilliance. Of these, the round brilliant cut is the one that maximizes brilliance.
In medieval Europe, diamonds that sparkled in candlelight at evening parties held by royalty and aristocrats were sought after, leading to advances in cutting techniques for even greater brilliance. However, the brilliant cut, which provides the most ideal sparkle and continues to this day, was discovered in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowski, a mathematician who was just 20 years old at the time.
Proportions are ranked on a five-point scale from Poor to Excellent, with Excellent cut proportions being the best. With diamonds, more than half of the rough stone is lost during the polishing process to achieve this ideal cut, but with moissanite, this Excellent cut can be produced relatively inexpensively, resulting in a very high and consistent cut quality. While it is the most brilliant and simplest, it also offers a design with infinite possibilities when combined. This may be the secret to the popularity of this cut. At La Vie Charme, we only carry Excellent cuts.
Cushion cut
Cushion Cut
Also known as a pillow cut, its facets (flat, polished surfaces) are similar to those of a round brilliant cut, but are larger. This allows it to capture more light and shine beautifully. A ratio of 1:1 or a rectangular 1:1.2 is considered beautiful. In the past, diamonds were cut with minimal cutting to maximize the use of rough diamonds, so most diamonds before 1850 were cushion cut. Even today, cushion cuts remain popular with those who appreciate the classic image of rounded corners and a feminine touch that lies within a sharp, feminine look.
Princess Cut
Princess Cut
A square-shaped cut, also known as the quadrillion cut, the princess cut successfully combines a square shape with brilliant sparkle. Its fine, delicate facets and numerous facets create a unique reflection, giving it a sparkling, noble brilliance. As the name suggests, the cut is popular in the United States as an engagement ring, evoked by its association with princesses and princesses. The princess cut, combining its beauty, raw material efficiency, and name, is said to be the most successful cut of the late 20th century. In the case of diamonds with low color grades, the color tends to show in the corners and the edges are prone to chipping, making this cut rare for large stones. However, with moissanite, high-quality pieces can be produced, making large princess cuts readily available.
Marquise Cut
Marquise Cut
In 1745, King Louis XV of France bestowed the title of Marquise on Madame de Pompadour. Madame de Pompadour was Louis XV's official mistress, known for her love of art and gourmet food, and for being the first woman in France to invent the baguette-shaped bread. A boat-shaped diamond that appeared in Paris around that time was named Marquise in honor of the Marquise de Pompadour.
The reason why marquise cut diamonds are so common is that they have a strong sparkle even though they are small. In addition, marquise cut diamonds appear larger than other shapes of the same carat, and multiple marquise cut diamonds are often combined to create various motifs such as wings, butterflies, water droplets, and flowers, which give a very glamorous impression and make jewelry even more enjoyable .
emerald cut
Emerald Cut
The term "emerald cut" became established because Colombian emeralds were cut in this shape. The key to the beauty of an emerald cut is its clarity and shape. Diamond cutters say that "in an emerald cut, it is impossible to hide any imperfections in the material," so the quality of the material is particularly important. In that respect, the highest quality moissanite can bring out the best in an emerald cut.
The emerald cut is characterized by its subdued elegance, rather than the sparkle of round or marquise cuts. It was especially popular in Japan in the 1950s, likely because the understated, strong beauty of the emerald cut complements traditional Japanese clothing.
Radiant
Radiant Cut
The radiant cut is a combination of the emerald-shaped "step cut" and the round-shaped "brilliant cut." It was developed by Henry Gross Bird in 1977 to combine the advantages of both and maximize brilliance (white light) and fire (rainbow-colored light). This cut allows you to enjoy the elegance of the emerald cut and the beautiful brilliance of the brilliant cut at the same time.
The radiant cut is strong and powerful, and like the emerald cut, it pairs well with Japanese clothing. It is also a cut that looks great with larger stones.
Oval cut
Oval Cut
The oval cut is characterized by its rounded oval shape at both ends. When made into a ring, it is easy to design as even a large size will not extend beyond the finger's width, and since it has a larger surface area compared to a round cut of the same carat weight, it is a cut that pairs well with large stones. The gentle, rounded shape looks good on any finger when made into a ring, and makes your fingers look longer.
The impression of oval cut jewelry changes considerably depending on the ratio of the oval. The most popular ratio is 1:7:1, which results in a very elongated shape. In the case of diamonds, it is difficult to find rough stones with this ratio, so the generally popular ratios are 1:3:1 or 1:4:1. In the case of moissanite, the shape can be freely specified, so it can be cut into any shape you like.
Heart Shape
Heart Shape
The heart is a shape that can be said to symbolize love and romance. For this reason, it is a very popular cut for engagement rings in Europe and the United States. The jewel that Rose threw into the sea in the famous movie Titanic was a 56 carat blue diamond necklace called "Heart of the Blue Ocean" owned by King Louis XVI, and it is a truly magnificent heart shape.
The heart-shaped cut is a heart-shaped piece cut into 65 facets, which requires a very high level of skill. Diamonds are very expensive because there are few rough stones that can be cut, but their adorable shape makes them very popular among women. With moissanite, it is possible to achieve a high-grade heart shape.
Generally, the ideal and most popular aspect ratio is 1:1.
Asscher Cut
Asscher Cut
This beautifully symmetrical cut was developed by Joseph Asscher, a genius cutter who was once a supplier to the British Royal Family. It is also known as the ultimate square cut, as it defies the conventional wisdom that diamonds must be round to sparkle.
The Asscher cut has a stepped shape and shines in lines, allowing you to see clearly into the inside of the stone, making it a very transparent cut. Compared to the 58 facets of a round brilliant cut, the Asscher cut has 74 facets, which is about 1.5 times as many, and it shines well even in dark places.
Pear Shape
Pear Shape
It is called a pear shape because of its pear shape, but it is also known as a teardrop cut because of its teardrop-like shape. It is highly designable and has a soft, feminine feel. As it is called a deer drop, it is often used in dangling earrings and necklaces. It is also often used as a petal motif by using multiple small stones, like a marquise cut. In rings, it takes advantage of its elongated shape and has the effect of making the finger look longer and slender, just like an oval cut. A single large stone creates a very elegant look, making it extremely popular among older people.
The world's largest diamond, the Cullinan I, owned by the British royal family, was also cut into this pear shape by the genius diamond cutter Joseph Asscher.
We can also provide other styles such as Criss cut, Rose cut, Old European cut, Trillions cut, Ice crushed cut, Jubilee cut, etc. to suit your preference.
